Matt Suckrow, Music Teacher

Hi, I’m MATT.

I've always loved music, but my passion for playing and performing began when I picked up my first guitar at the age of 13. I had a wonderful guitar teacher who taught me how to play the songs I loved to listen to, while also teaching me the foundations of the instrument. Today, that's what I do with my students.

As a teacher, I strive to meet each student where they're at, figure out their skill level, what their favorite music is, and make learning to play the instrument fun. If that's the type of teaching style you're looking for, reach out! I work with students of all ages, backgrounds, and learning styles, including those with disabilities and neurodivergence.

A Little More About Me:

  • I've taught private music lessons (guitar, bass, ukulele) for the past four years.

  • I was the primary guitar and ukulele instructor at Luscombe Music in Elmhurst for three years until the store closed in June 2024. (Fun fact: Luscombe Music is where I took my first guitar lessons as a kid!)

  • I’ve also taught music for organizations such as School of Rock and Bach to Rock.

  • I've been a singer-songwriter, band leader, touring and session musician since 1999.

  • I graduated from Judson University in 2007 with a BA in Communication Arts, where I studied music theory, composition, and worship arts.

  • I graduated from York High School in 2003.

  • I live with my wife Bethany and our daughter Gemma in Lombard.

My Approach

I believe in creating well-rounded lessons customized for each student, based on where you're at in your musical journey. Utilizing a mix of method books, sheet music, song books, and charts, I teach musical concepts to guide you toward achieving your musical goals.

Flexible

Being a neurodivergent learner myself, I'm flexible with my students and their learning styles. Don't worry about whether you can read sheet music or know your scales; together we'll find a rhythm for learning the music and techniques that works for you.

Fun

In my lessons, we'll start with you the music that makes you want to play, because learning should be fun.

My Teaching Space

I teach my students in my home studio in Lombard! My instruments and collection of vintage music memorabilia bring me a lot of inspiration, and I hope they do for you too.
